The ECCO Map process works especially well with explaining how scientific processes work. Students can easily cite examples to develop supportable hypotheses. It also works for science experiments.

This Environmental Science lesson was taught in a 9th grade regular education classroom. Using the “Data Nugget” science story as background information, students could develop their own hypotheses, knowing they could support them—because they already had the evidence. Before the ECCO Map, students wrote short phrases in response to questions about the article. Now they enjoy a richer understanding that they can connect to other science concepts.
