Build a Schoolwide Writing System

A Consistent Approach Across the School

ECCO consulting helps schools build a consistent approach to analytical thinking and writing. Teachers learn to use the ECCO framework within the curriculum they already teach. The goal is a shared approach that becomes part of everyday classroom practice.

Schoolwide Implementation in Practice

Westside Atlanta Charter School: Schoolwide ECCO Implementation

ECCO was implemented across Grades 3–8 at Westside Atlanta Charter School. What began in individual classrooms grew into a schoolwide approach to writing and analytical thinking. Teachers learned to use the same framework across grade levels, creating greater consistency for students as they moved through the school.

A Schoolwide Approach

ECCO works within the learning objectives and assessment criteria schools already use. Teachers learn a common process for helping students gather evidence, develop ideas, and build stronger writing.

As ECCO expands across grade levels, students encounter the same way of thinking from classroom to classroom. That consistency gives students a stronger foundation as they move through the school.

What School Leaders Are Saying

“Dr. Jon Epstein’s support as a writing coach has been transformative for Westside Atlanta Charter School. Through his guidance, our team successfully implemented the ECCO backward mapping process to ensure strong alignment across our Grades 3–8 writing program.

The results have been evident in student achievement. Our students demonstrated substantial growth in informational writing, strong growth in narrative writing, and measurable analytical growth in opinion/argumentative writing on the Georgia Milestones Assessment across Grades 3–8.

His partnership has helped create a more coherent, rigorous writing program that continues to benefit both educators and students.”
